You know the products you want – But how do you pull your kitchen together?

Designing your kitchen is a fun and exciting process; however, many people have trouble pulling the “look” together.  The four main components to coordinate in your kitchen are: cabinetry, countertops, flooring, and backsplash.  Remember the color scheme and materials you choose should complement the adjacent rooms, especially if they can be seen from the kitchen.

There is no exact order anyone needs to follow when picking out their materials.  Usually, I tell people to pick out something they love and then we’ll design around it; whether it is a backsplash tile, a granite countertop, or a cabinet door.  The use of several complimentary textures can add variety and keep the interest alive in your space.

Keep in mind that the colors and patterns you choose can make the room appear larger or smaller.   While dark, warm colors make a space feel comfortable and intimate, light, cool colors make a space feel open and spacious.  Another way to visually expand space is to keep the eye moving; you can do this by using colors with low contrast.  If you want to make a space feel more confined, you should use dark or warm colors and use intense contrasts between your materials.

Also, know that if you are choosing wood that has horizontal or vertical grain it can really impact your room.  A horizontal line visually stretch’s a room, creating the illusion of increasing space; but, at the same time lowers it.  Contrary, vertical lines, narrow the space on the level, visually increasing it, making the room seem more open.
