Small Kitchens can be Functional and Beautiful!
Don’t believe us? Take this kitchen remodel project from our good friends at Puhlmann Lumber & Design, a family owned building materials and design company in New Ulm, MN. Kari Linbo, kitchen and interior designer for Pulmann Lumber & Design, helped her clients maximize every nook and cranny of this 400 square foot kitchen.
It was a builder’s spec home; therefore had little aesthetic appeal and the upgrades were few and far between. The overall layout of the home was appealing to the homeowners but the kitchen was deal breaker for them. They wanted a quality cabinetry (lacking with the “builder standard”) and a better aesthetic overall.
A large island was a must compared to the ”choppy” peninsula that was currently in place. We worked intently to come up with the unique design for the island because we needed to take into account a number of things like limited space, traffic flow, a sink, plenty of counter space for holiday baking and, of course, seating for quick meals and conversation.
The homeowners have a more traditional taste and wanted that to reflect in their kitchen. What we decided to do was a classic off-white finish on the perimeter cabinetry and with the island we introduced a custom colored green finish with distressing and glazing for that more “lived-in” feel. We also did a combination of laminate and quartz counter tops for budget reasons, using the quartz on the island since it is the statement piece of the room and because it would be the area with the most use. The homeowners are extremely pleased with the outcome and feel their new kitchen better suits their style and the way they live.
